15 Tips for a Small Home that Do Not Require Major Renovation

1.  Do away with the thought that you “might need an item some day”. Get rid of stuff that you no longer use.

2.  Gather all your items from one room in a place and get rid of items whose job could be done by something else. E.g. If you have a blender and a magic bullet and you only ever use the magic bullet, get rid of the blender.

3.  Sell, donate or recycle things you no longer need. Try not to pass on your clutter to extended family.

4.  Maximise closet space. Hang things up and use the space at the bottom of the hung clothes to store shoes, caps, sunglasses, etc.

5.  Get items off the floor. Don’t use the floor as storage space. This makes it easier to sweep and clean.

6.  Utilize vertical space. Place see-through containers in shelves where possible. Mount a pegboard on the wall and hang stuff off it.

7.  Get rid of loosely hanging curtains and install sliding doors where possible. Opt for sliding doors that have an overhead track system instead of pocket doors, which are a huge renovation project.

That being said, curtains make a space look airy. If you’re keeping your curtains, put up a strong curtain rod with pleasant looking ends.

8.  Add color and texture with furnishings such as curtains, bedsheets and cushions.

9.  Paint your house using light colors such as white, gray, off-white, etc. Use light colors for your walls and ceilings.

10. Don’t forget your fridges and cabinets. Mirrored cabinets make a space look bigger, while a nice design on your refrigerator will be a visual treat to the eyes.

11. Talking about mirrors, have as many as possible in your house and place them strategically to reflect light.

12. Add personal effects like paintings, drawings and souvenirs judiciously.

13. The correct lighting can make your small home look bigger. Go for multiple light sources rather than one central source. Overhead lighting, tall floor lamps, table lamps and wall sconces work well in such spaces.

If you need to make a narrow and long space look more airy and wide, add some wall lights. Maximise natural light.

If you have small windows, break them and make them bigger. Add grills for security, if needed.

14. Opt for transparent surfaces and compact furniture. Come up with nifty storage solutions and make your furniture multi-functional.

15. Maintain your redone, decluttered home. Be very choosy about what you allow to come into your house.

If you’re considering getting something new, try to make sure it can serve multiple functions and isn’t a duplicate of something you already have.

Before you buy something, think about where you will store/keep it in your home.

Put things back after they have been used.
